What Cydia Offers Jailbroken IPhone Users

Jailbreaking has been lauded by the media and various technology news outlets for the supposed harm it causes to the average iPhone user. Reality dictates that the process is far simpler than most people realize, and does not intentionally harm the phone through its usage. Despite all the media coverage about its ills, there are a large number of modded users who are enjoying the various services and apps that comes with a jailbroken device, increasing its longevity and usability all at once with one simple process that can be done by the average user.

The legality of jailbreaking has been attested to both in the field and in court, though it was officially ruled that it is completely safe for the average user who decides to modify their device. It has become more of a personal choice to modify devices, instead of one that was shadowed by malicious intent in regards to spam or viruses. For users who desire a more robust and customized experience, jailbreaking offers what stock devices do not.

By modifying their phone, users can access a variety of third party applications that are not approved. The largest third party app store was once called Rock, until it was bought out and taken over by Jay Freeman, also known as saurik, and became Cydia. Cydia offers modded users thousands of applications and services. One of the largest is "themes" graphical interfaces that change the way the phone looks.

Colors and even icon images can be changed with the themes feature. Every aspect of the phone can be changed graphically, from the start up image to the selection colors, as well as the browser theme, most likely Safari. Categories are implemented in the store to make searching for themes much easier for the user.

The applications found on Cydia also have different categories, the exact same as the normal store. Users can browse games, news, books, and utilities all at once, in a clear interface designed for ease of navigation.

Rather than having to go through the normal ordeal of approval or rejection, third party applications can enter Cydia without fear of immediate rejection. However, the community is very inclined on what should stay and what should go, and as such, applications that are mediocre or do not offer what is promised can be forcibly removed. The star system of rating found in the official store is the same in Cydia, for both apps and themes.

Third party apps offer device utilities that make things easier when syncing, such as doing this without wires, and offering tethering programs for those with other devices capable of internet usage. None of these services are offered or approved, and thus the community has made a point to tout these various features for users who are considering jailbreaking.

These features are not offered in any form, and they are integral to the modding experience, as they give devices a new lease on life, and renewed enjoyment for their services.
